THE BUSINESS CASE FOR DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
The demographics are compelling. The importance for organizations to focus on the development and implementation of well-planned strategies for increased diversity and developing inclusive cultures is unquestionable.
In 2000, non-whites comprised 28% of the U.S. workforce. By 2020, non-whites will increase to 36% and by 2050 to 50% of the U.S. workforce. Within the Fortune 500, companies with highest representation of women in top management experienced 35.1 higher ROE and 34% higher TRS than those in the bottom quartile of representation of women. Our working age population will continue to decrease while senior population will double by 2030, and equal 1/3 of our population by 2100. By 1999, the "traditional family" comprised only 35% of all family households. And, the buying power of minority groups and emerging markets is rising - rapidly. The collective buying power of people of color grew from $600,000B in 1990 to $1.4T in 2001. And, the GLBT market has a collective buying power of $450M and tends to spend money with "GLBT friendly" organizations.
